PROJECTS FOR YEAR 2009/2010

‘TAKING THE FUTURE IN OUR HANDS’

FOR THE 2009-2010 ROTARY YEAR, THE RC OF WUSE-CENTRAL IS SEEKING PARTNERS TO SUPPORT AND MATCH THE FOLLOWING PROJECTS:

Project 1: Water Management Project.
Provision of a sustainable source of potable water.
Project Location:
Government Secondary School Gwarinpa, FCT Abuja.

Identified Need:
The school which has students within the ages of 9 years to 17 years, lack of any source water within the school premises. This has impacted on the personal hygiene and sanitary conditions within the school, resulting in out-door defecation and poor personal hygiene. In addition, the situation has also contributed to truancy as students frequently leave the premises under the disguise of going to buy drinking water.

Background:
With the flourishing of Private High Schools in Gwarinpa, a new developing sub-urb of the Abuja, there has been a systematic neglect of public school infrastructure and amenities. Recognizing that the Public School remain the only recourse for children and wards of the lower classes and poor within the society, The RC Wuse-Central working with members of our Provision Club in Gwarinpa to meet this crucial need of providing potable water for the school premises which is the major public high school facility in the district. The RC Wuse-Central has extensive experience with water projects having successfully executed four in the last couple of years.

Project Description:
A 2-point borehole with submersible pumps and motorized tap outlets and 10,000 overhead tanks would be provided. The overhead tanks would be supported by steel stanchion; and piping extensions made to the existing sanitary facilities.

Estimate Cost and Proposed Funding:
24, 200 US Dollars; through Matching Grant. Anticipated contribution by RC Wuse Central is $3,800.

Benefiting Population:
Over 1,000 Students and fallout to surrounding community.

Expected Project Outcome:
· Improved learning environment
· Better hygiene and sanitary conditions within the School premises
· Projected reduction in water borne and water washed conditions amongst the students.
· Making a tiny little bit contribution towards the Millennium Development Goals.

Project 2: Continued Support to Anawin Home.
Request for teaching aids and kindergarten and Elementary school materials; and provision of potable water within the school premises.

Project Location:
Nursery and Primary School premises run by Anawin Home, in Gwagwalada district of Abuja.

Identified Need:
Lack of educational and teaching aids. No function library section and supplementary text or homework books. In addition, lack of water for the students both within and without the immediate school premises.

Background:
Anawim Home for the Poorest of Poor Home situated in the Gwagwalada District of Abuja is a home for destitute, orphans, outcaste single mothers and the very poor. It is managed by a team of Religious under the supervision of the local catholic Ordinary. The home has been adopted as a major pet project of the club over the last 5 years. The club has executed numerous projects in the home with International partners and has pledged to always support the home. The home has over the last 2 years established a school (about 2km from the home) of 5 classrooms for its children and the children from the neighboring communities. Formal Adult educational classes are also being provided for Adult residents of the Home. The school which is a miss of permanent block work and temporary wood structure has no source of potable water except transported from the home or purchased in the village. The home has a fairly good history of international support and volunteers, most of which commenced after exposure by the RC of Wuse-Central. Volunteers are usually housed within the premises in a section of the hostel built by the Club.

Project Description:
1. Donations and shipping of kindergarten and elementary school level teaching aids, books and reference materials, by international partners.
2. Request for International Community Service or Private Volunteers to teach in Adult classes (and also children). Presence of foreign volunteers could spice up the programme, attract additional participation from the community and generate required local government support in future.
3. Sinking of 2 hand-operated (manual) water pumps for consumption and use within the school premises.

Estimate Cost and Proposed Funding Source:
The water component of the project: 8,000 US Dollars.
Minor renovation and partitioning for Library books: 1,500 US Dollars

Bilateral Funding between Rotary Clubs is anticipated for this project. Projected contribution for RC Wuse Central $2,600. Internal and local personal donations are also being sought.

Benefiting Population:
· Children and Adults of the Anawin Home, which has an average (fluctuating) population of 50 persons.
· The surrounding community. Beneficiary population not yet assessed.

Expected Project Outcome:
· Improved learning environment and materials for the Anawin residents those significantly impacting on their ability to achieve education success and self dependence.
· Improve health status of the School Children due to available of potable drinking water on demand.

Project 3: Medical Outreach:
Provision of basic medication to very poor patients who seek medical care but cannot afford drugs.

Project Location:
· Government General Hospital Wuse, Abuja
· Outreach to surrounding Gwari villages

Identified Need:
· Significant number of patients who after seeking care cannot afford the drugs.
· Many surrounding Gwari village who are the ethnic dwellers of the Abuja area do not have any health facility in the community.

Background:
Interactions and reports from medical staff of the general hospital Wuse, indicates the presence of a Significant number of patients who after seeking care cannot afford the drugs especially the chronically ill. They thus result to begging within and around the hospital premises.

The RC of Wuse-Central has over the year maintain a Drug Cabinet within the General Hospital to provide medication (based on the Doctors’ prescription) to very poor patients who cannot afford to pay. The project which started in 2001 just for Hypertensive project progressed to involve the provision of medication for diabetic patients, sickle cell anemia, broad spectrum antibiotics and other drugs determined by the projections of the hospital pharmacists. When patients are identified by the health personnel, they are referred to the Hospital social worker who does a social ‘workup’ and determine if the person qualifies for the free drugs. This project has not been serviced in the last 2 years mainly due to change in hospital administration, but the Club has decided to revamp it this new Rotary year.

Likewise, it has been observed that many surrounding Gwari village who are the ethnic dwellers of the Abuja area do not have any health facility in the community. Thus they seek care based on lay advise or utilized untested local remedies.

Project Description:
Following a technical interaction with the hospital Pharmacist and Sociologist, projections are made on drug needs and these are provided in the drug cabinet marked ‘RC Wuse-Central. Drugs stock is routinely replenished every quarter except a flag is raised by the hospital staff. Relevant data of those treated are kept for follow up and in order to ensure transparency.

Furthermore, the Club ‘package and conduct outreach services to surround villages without health care facilities. Following an initial rapid assessment of need, Medical volunteers would be mobilized to join Rotarians who are medical personnel to conduct mass screen and delivery of basic health care and facilitate necessary referrals over a period of 2 days. Repeat visits would be conduct based on need to a maximum of 6 visits within the Rotary Year.

Estimate Cost and Proposed Funding Source:
· 750 US Dollars quarterly for the hospital based project; i.e. $3,000 for the year.
· Estimate of $2,000 dollars per outreach i.e. $12,000 for six outreaches.

The Club is looking forward to matching directly with Clubs for this project. A projected Club fund for this project is $3,000.

Benefiting Population:
Patients of the hospital and populations in the communities that are yet to be assessed.

Expected Project Outcome:
Improved health status of the beneficiaries.

Project 3: Toilet Facilities in Public Market:
Provision of sanitary facilities within a public market and water for waste disposal.

Project Location:
Nursery and Primary School premises run by Anawin Home, in Gwagwalada district of Abuja.

Identified Need:
There is a lack of adequate sanitary facilities within the public market place.

Background:
The federal capital authorities recently renovated the major public markets within Abuja, but inadequately provided for toilet facilities. In order to contribute to the overall sanitation of the market, the Club intends to construct public sanitary facilities and provide water for maintenance of the facilities. The facilities would be opened to the public without charge. Negotiations would be entered with the market authorities to second Janitors to maintain the facility.

Project Description:
The toilet facility to be constructed would contain 4 Toilets, 2 urinary, 4 washing-hand basins, and a mirror for men and 4 Toilets, 4 washing-hand basins, and a mirror for women, including a small reception area for a caretaker.

A single point borehole with 2,000 liters overhead tank would be sunk to maintain the facilities. would be Borehole with overhead tank will also be installed to provide constant water supply to maintain the toilet and the facility will serve all the people that go to the market, including the sellers themselves. We will work with the market authority on maintaining this facility

Estimate Cost and Proposed Funding Source:
35,000 US Dollars to provide the toilet facilities and borehole. The Clubs projected input for this project is $5,000. An international matching grant is being sought for this project.

Benefiting Population:
Traders and Visitors to the Market.

Expected Project Outcome:
Improved sanitary conditions in the market.

Project 5: Rotary Public Relations.

Support and ideas are being sought to place a water fountain in a public park in the federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, Abuja. It is envisaged that such a fountain bearing the Rotary Wheel would provide very good public relation for Rotary and bring our activities to the fore of the Abuja community. A Marble Wall by the fountain would highlight Rotary International efforts in Abuja and list all our Club Projects and all International support received. This Plague would be updated each Rotary Year.

The cost of this project is currently being estimated but crucially needs some support to move on. An international public relation grant is being considered for this project.

PROPOSED ON-GOING PROJECTS TO COMMENCE IN 2009-2010.

To Club intends to provide scholarships for five (5) needy candidates for their secondary education. The scholarship would be restricted to tuition fees and books.

The estimate cost is 2,000 US Dollars per annum.

2. Health Living Awareness and Road Safety Campaigns:
The Club would partner with relevant authorities to conduct twice a year campaign on topical issues relating to health living and road safety.

Support is being sought from Partners for customized Rotary branded Fez caps, T-shirts, pamphlets and useful handouts for these campaigns.

The estimated costs of these campaigns are 1, 000 US Dollars per campaign.

3. Support for Polio Immunization:
The Club intends to scale up its participation in the immunization plus days as part of the last booster efforts to kick Polio out. Support is required for customized Rotary branded Aprons and Fez caps and T-shirts and ‘Add-ons (Pluses) for children.

4. Donation of Insecticide Treated Bed Nets (ITNs).
Malaria remains the highest cost of morbidity in Nigerian hospitals and mortality in our under 5 year old children. The RC Wuse-Central intends to support the current efforts of government’s Roll Back Malaria programme. The Club intends to encourage members of community where we work to serve as volunteers and support our activities. Such volunteers would work with us to identify pregnant mothers and children under-five to benefit from the free ITNs.

Partners are being sought to procure and ship these ITNs for distribution. Clearing and distribution cost would be borne by the Club. Further details of this would be worked out with a willing partner.

Please do not hesitate to contact any of the undersigned for any further clarification, details and discussions.

Family of Rotary

The Past President of Rotary Club of Wuse Central, Jafa'aru Brai Ugbodaga, on Saturday 4th April 2009 hosted Rotarians and friends to a great outing as he had his Son's naming ceremony. It was fun-filled as most club members showed up and celebrated with this rotary family.
It also created an opportunity to sell Rotary to all those who were there.

The kids played and the adults felt like they're kids again. There was music, dancing, enough to eat and drink.

On enterviewing Jaf, as he is fondly called, he told us that this will be his last naming ceremony, bt i guess the wife will have the final say!!!

Anyway, the rain didnt stop anyone, cos everyone stayed and dared the elements, and the rain waited until we had our fill of fun before letting loose.

Thats the way it is in Rotary Club of Wuse Central, we're fun, we're hard working and we all live rotary.

Rotary District 9125

The new Rotary District in Nigeria which was formerly District 9120 and District 9130 merged together and attended their first outing with the Presidents Elect Training Seminar at Tahir Guest Palace, Nassarawa GRA, Kano and Rotarians were really treated like Presidents in a real Palace.

This is one of the BEST trainings witnessed in the two Districts. There was no cutting down to save anything like time or whatever, and everyone sat and participated in the training for as long as it went without feeling any urge to leave.
Hard questions were asked, life situations treated, and everyone was motivated enough to enjoy and be happy to belong to this big family of Rotary.

The Assistant District Governors were trained, the Incoming Club Presidents were trained, and the incoming Club Secretaries and other Rotarians were also trained one day specially. Some few incoming Presidents that did not make the Seminar will be lucky to enjoy the largess of the incoming district Governor, who will go back on his word of not inducting them, but will arrange special training for them in his large conference room in Abuja.
This tells everyone that Rotary must be done the right way in the new district.
Rotarians were encouraged to contribute to Every Rotarian Every Year to a minimum of $100 per annum...who can’t afford this in a year???? No one!!!!

Rotary Foundation Contribution was called for, from those who are yet to join the Paul Harris Fellow Club (when you contribute a minimum of $1,000 USD) to help rotary with kicking out Polio from countries like Nigeria, etc:

Rotary Club of Wuse Central as usual, is already setting a glowing pace in this regard by targeting to become the First 100% PHF Club in Abuja, already, 70% of its membership are already PHF members and we are still counting and hopefully, this all important target will be met.
Wuse Central is a club of very young Rotarians who are all very active in their different fields of endeavor. The try to start and finish at least, two community service projects every year.
How can you encourage them? Send your suggestions.
